LEXL ORV flight to Echo Lake
Saturday morning flight to Echo Lake, a private airstrip and we did not have permission to land there so we circled and headed back to T25. Legal Eagle XL ORV enjoyed stretching his legs on this short flight. Here in East Texas trees are everywhere so you have to keep eyes open for possible emergency landing sites along the way. Most of the time a possible location is within gliding distance. The horizon is nice and flat, we used to fly with foot hills in the windscreen most of time and I have to find things below to distract me. Lots to look at from 500 to 750 ft above ground level and moving 45 mph.

LEXL ORV on Beautiful ETX evening
Переглядів 728День тому
LEXL ORV flight on a beautiful evening in June. the Verner 3V did a fine job of hauling me and ORV around and the weather forgot to send any bumps our way. Very Smooth and clear. Would have liked to strayed further away but fuel was limiting me to about 1/2 hour with reserve. Still very nice evening. Love the Legal Eagle XL a Part 103 Ultralight.

Flying and Aerolite 103 with MX201 engine. I forgot to put the flaps down, only machine I fly with flaps. Used them on landing though. It was a fairly warm day, ok, hot day, so climb was not very good without flaps for as heavy as I am. It was a very calm day and clear so got some good flying in.

The original LEXL only has a hall effect air speed and it was not working for some reason but everything worked great. I want to Thank Leonard Milholland for letting me fly the original LEXL.

      The Verner Les is using is fully developed and proven, and it is what he already has. Your vg23air is still just a paper design, it has not been build or run or flown. You can't fly a paper design, you need hardware. You might want to hold off making claims until you have fully developed your vg23air to verify the performance, durability and reliability. I truly hope you are completely successful in your efforts, it will add another option for ultralight builders which is a good thing. Even if/when the vg23air is fully developed it is still poor form to knock someone else's choices, Les didn't ask viewers for feedback on his engine choice. At this time no ultralight engine option stands head and shoulders above the rest. All options have their benefits and drawbacks so what engine a builder chooses depends on their goals and preferences.

      @vg23air 9 днів тому

      @@JeffCurtisIflyHG the 23 has been used in the EU for over a decade lol, the verner is over priced look at me folley. it has gone in and out of production and if it does again its a nice door stop, its also not 103 legal, no way a plane makes less than 254 with that engine

    • @JeffCurtisIflyHG
      @JeffCurtisIflyHG 9 днів тому

      @@vg23air you specifically stated the vg23air, the motor you are developing, is lighter, more powerful and cheaper than the Verner, but your motor has yet to be built, run, and flown. Les developed a 23 for the Legal Eagle that didn't require any internal modifications (different goals from yours) but didn't weigh less, had much less power, and is cheaper. Different goals, different results. I'm not saying the Verner is a better choice, just a different one. I'm aware that it has been in and out of production, one of the drawbacks is that Verner is a very small company so for some that is a concern. Just because the engine is no longer manufactured doesn't mean you can't still use it if you have one, look at all the 2-stroke Rotax motors that are still powering ultralights and LSA long after the motors have been discontinued. Also, do your research, the Verner weighs 81 pounds with the starter. You still have to add exhaust pipes, an engine mount, and an oil tank and plumbing but it is possible to make weight. ORV (the Legal Eagle in the video) originally was built with a 1/2 VW before being converted. Les built his SR 7 1/2 Legal Eagle planning to use the Verner from the start and he came in underweight, so it is possible, if you plan for it. Over priced is in the buyers opinion. A 1/2 VW is cheaper but requires a significant amount of internal fabrication, especially of rotating parts, and in the end, for the same weight, you have to hand prop and use a constant loss ignition system. Some builders would rather pay more for a more complete solution. In my opinion, that is one of the major benefits of the Aero1000. It is the most complete solution requiring the least amount of fabrication by the builder, all the development is done by the factory. Are there things that I don't like about the Aero1000, certainly. I would rather it be a 90 degree V-twin, I would rather it had a replaceable oil filter instead of a screen, I would rather it have a water pump and thermostat instead of being gravity fed, but the rest of it is everything I want, especially EFI. I'll say it again, bashing Les's choice of power plant is uncalled for, especially since he wasn't looking for anyone's opinion, and especially since your specific proposed solution is completely unproven. Build it, measure the performance, fly it, prove it is reliable and durable and let the data speak for itself.

    I met Dennis Carley, the best aircraft builder I ever met, who took me up in his Zenith in the first decade of this century, not long after I started light sport training. Other than trikes, which I also learned to fly (and actually in recreational flying, find them more fun than fixed wing), the Aerolight 103 I feel is the finest time tested Ultralight that has ever flown. I found living in the high hangar rent, urban sprawl area of Phoenix, ultralight flying was not possible and I returned to renting aircraft on a wet lease for a day recreational trip. But having flown a trike, suspended as one is in an Aerolight 103, there is nothing as fundamental as being a pilot, feeling like a bird, with the breeze on our face, as with these aircraft, which are actually quite safe if we train up for them. In 1966, when my folks took me on a PSA Electra from Oakland to Burbank, I knew I would be at least a GA pilot someday. My wife made that possible on my 45th birthday in '06 when she gave me an Xmas present intro flight gift certificate the previous Christmas in '05. UA-cam and products like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, which I highly recommend and one can even add an Aerolight 103 to it for a nominal fee, allows content providers like you to share your passion for flying, and you flew so well and gracefully in this video it seemed the trees below were bowing to you in awe, lol.

    One of the interesting observations about this view is that you can see how much downward pressure there is on the horizontal stabilizer fabric during normal flight. I think it would be really interesting to add tufts of yarn to the H-stab and V-stab in the areas near the gaps and fly again with the same camera location to see the airflows. I have long thought that the stabilizers would be more effective (less drag, more lift) if the gaps were eliminated as was done by Joe Spencer on his Putt Putt. I plan on making the H-stab one piece instead of two to eliminate the gap and avoid the bowing from fabric pull and I also plan on mounting the V-stab tight to the H-stab to remove that gap as well. This should also be lighter as it will eliminate two steel brackets and associated hardware.
